[edit] Production
Principal photography on the film has begun on November 16, 2010,[3] it was originally slated to commence on October 18, 2010 and continue until May 2011 in New York.[11] However, filming has now been split into two parts the first taking place from November to December 2010 filming the majority of the present day scenes, before a two month break till mid-February where filming will resume to finish filming the remaining sections.[3] Rumors initially stated that filming was delayed due to issues with the films scripts, though producers have denied this saying instead that the filming was delayed to take advantage of New York tax incentives and to film scenes in warmer weather. Producer Walter F. Parkes has said that they must begin filming before 2010 ends to benefit from the tax incentives, and picking up in February allows them to film some needed scenes in the warmer spring climate.[3] The first set photos for the film turned up online on November 17, 2010 showing Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Emma Thompson, and Nicole Scherzinger on the set of the film.[5]The film was first announced on April 1, 2009 by Sony Pictures Entertainment president, Rory Bruer, during a Sony ShoWest presentation.[12] In October 2009, it was revealed that Etan Cohen, writer of Tropic Thunder and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, had been attached to write a screenplay for the film.[13] In March 2010, it was reported that Will Smith was deciding whether to join this film or another film, The City That Sailed, instead.[14] Though the return of the two protagonists played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones was officially confirmed by director Barry Sonnenfeld in May 2010.[2] Both had previously expressed interest in reprising their roles back in 2008.[15][16] Other producing staff include Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald as producers with Steven Spielberg as executive producer, all three were producers for previous films in the series.[17]
In June a second writer, David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and Spider-Man had also been attached to re-write the film's original script.[18] A teaser trailer for the film was leaked online on June 11, 2010. It showed Will Smith dressed as Agent J wearing 3-D glasses and stating "I'm about to make 3-D look good."[19] A teaser poster for the film was also released on September 21, 2010.[20] A third writer, Jeff Nathanson, who wrote Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal has also been hired in November 2010 to rewrite parts of the script.[21] Both writers, Jeff Nathanson and David Koepp along with producer Steven Spielberg had all previously worked together on the 2008 film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
